Which is better for you depends on a variety of factors, including your current prescription and how thick your corneas are.
LASIK procedures are designed to reshape the cornea of your eye, allowing your eye to better focus light and providing you with clearer vision. The surgeon creates a small “flap” on the surface of your eye, and then uses an excimer laser is then used to gently reshape your cornea.
During PRK, the surgeon completely removes the outer layer of the cornea instead of creating a flap, allowing them to access more of the corneal stroma underneath. The cornea is then reshaped with the excimer laser.
Your eyes will regrow the removed cells within a couple of days. PRK has a longer recovery time than LASIK but can be a better choice for some patients, such as those with thin corneas.
If your optometrist determines that laser eye surgery is a good option for you, they will discuss the benefits and risk factors with you, address any questions you may have, and determine if LASIK or PRK is best for you.
