What is Amblyopia & Strabismus?

Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, is a condition that occurs when only one of your eyes has poor vision. When this happens, your brain may rely more heavily on your “better” eye, causing the affected eye not to work as efficiently.

Amblyopia develops during childhood, usually between birth and 7 years of age, and can occur if:

  • You have a muscle imbalance between your 2 eyes
  • You have an uncorrected refractive error in one eye
  • You have congenital cataracts or other issues that could prevent light from reaching the retina of one eye

Strabismus, also known as crossed eyes, is a condition that occurs when your eyes don’t align properly, causing them to point in different directions. Strabismus can occur for various reasons, including:

  • A family history of the condition
  • High refractive errors like myopia, astigmatism, or hyperopia
  • Muscle deficiencies around your eyes
  • Head injuries

Common Symptoms

With both conditions, you may experience symptoms that affect not only the quality of your vision but also your eye comfort and visual efficiency, including:

  • Squinting
  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Blurry vision
  • Double vision
  • Poor depth perception
  • Poor eye tracking
  • Difficulty focusing

How Vision Therapy Helps

We can help improve your vision by addressing a range of visual skills, including accommodation, tracking, binocular teaming, and more.

Each vision therapy program is tailored specifically for you and your needs, but some of the most common tools we use for treatment include:

  • Therapeutic eyeglass lenses
  • Prismatic lenses either incorporated within your prescription eyewear or worn in conjunction during various activities or tasks
  • Filters
  • Balance boards
  • Computer programs and technology designed to stimulate and enhance the visual system
